Detroit, Mich. – The second round of the Horizon League Men’s Basketball Championship at Joe Louis Arena was a repeat of the first round as the higher seeds both won on Sunday to advance to Monday’s semifinals. Green Bay dispatched rival Milwaukee in the first game, while Wright State never trailed past an early 2-0 deficit to defeat Detroit.

Top-seed Valparaiso and second-seed Oakland begin play on Monday. The Crusaders will take on Green Bay at 7 p.m. on ESPNU. Oakland will tip against Wright State at 9:30 p.m. on ESPNU.

No. 4 Green Bay defeated No. 5 Milwaukee, 70-61, in the opening game of the Second Round of the 2016 Little Caesars Horizon League Men’s Basketball Championship on Sunday at Joe Louis Arena.

Green Bay guard Carrington Love led the Phoenix with 16 points and six assists in the victory.

The contest stayed tight early on before Green Bay scored on seven straight shots en route to a 14-3 run with just over two minutes remaining in the first half to open an 11-point lead. The Phoenix were unable cash in during the final two minutes of action, but held a 31-25 lead going into the break.

Milwaukee erased the six point halftime deficit four minutes into the second frame and the two teams were deadlocked at 35-35.

In a game that featured 11 lead changes, the back-and-forth play continued in the second half with Milwaukee opening a six point lead and then Green Bay following suit with a 9-0 run to hold a 55-52 edge with just over five minutes remaining. The Phoenix didn’t look back and closed out the game to advance to the semifinals where they will square off against No. 1 Valparaiso at 7 p.m. on Monday at Joe Louis Arena.

No. 3 Wright State 82, No. 6 Detroit 72
Senior forward JT Yoho led the Raiders with 20 points as No. 3 Wright State defeated No. 6 Detroit Titans, 82-72, in the second game on Sunday in the 2016 Little Caesars Horizon League Men’s Basketball Championship at Joe Louis Arena. 

Wright State held a 16-point lead midway through the first half, but Detroit stormed back and made it a two-point game with an 11-0 run with six minutes remaining in the frame. The Titans shot 50.0% (12-for-24) from the field in the first half, but trailed the Raiders, 37-29, at the break. 

Wright State came out of the gates hot in the second frame, cashing in on six of their first seven possessions to open a 17-point lead just over five minutes into the action. 

Midway through the second half, Detroit cut the deficit to nine, and chipped away to nine again with just under a minute left, but Wright State cashed in free throws late to advance and play No. 2 Oakland in the semifinals on Monday at 9:30 p.m. at Joe Louis Arena.

Detroit was led by sophomore guard Paris Bass who had 24 points and 13 rebounds in the defeat.
