Men’s volleyball teams from the United States, Canada, Cuba and Mexico will battle in the first step toward 2016 Olympic Games qualification at the NORCECA Champions Cup at Joe Louis Arena from Thursday, May 21 through Saturday, May 23. Admission is free and open to the public.

The NORCECA Champions Cup will qualify the top two finishing teams for the FIVB World Cup on Sept. 8-23 in Japan. The top two placers at World Cup will qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The Champions Cup tournament is being held in Detroit in conjunction with the USA Volleyball Open National Championships.

“The NORCECA Champions Cup is tremendously important for us as we begin our drive to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games,” U.S. Head Coach John Speraw said. “Canada, Cuba and Mexico will be bringing their best teams and we will need to be at the top of our game as well.”

“We are truly honored that Detroit will be the first stop for these teams as they begin their quest to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games,” said Dave Beachnau, Detroit Sports Commission executive director. “Hosting this significant event along with the USA Volleyball Open National Championships and its Annual Meeting provides our destination an excellent opportunity to highlight the sport for multiple days.”

The NORCECA zone includes countries from North America, Central America and the Caribbean. The U.S. Men are ranked No. 1 in NORCECA and No. 5 in the world. Cuba (No. 2) is 11th in the world. Canada (No. 3) is No. 14 in the world and Mexico (No. 4) is 22 in the world. Each team will play the other three teams one time in a straight round-robin.
