“DUEL IN THE D” BETWEEN MICHIGAN AND MICHIGAN STATE SET FOR FEB. 5 AT THE JOE

New “Iron D” Trophy is on the Line for the Winning Team – Little Caesars Family 4-Packs Start at $49 & FOX Sports Detroit

DETROIT – The fierce in-state rivalry between the University of Michigan Wolverines and the Michigan State University Spartans continues with the “Duel in the D” at Joe Louis Arena on Friday, Feb. 5 at 7:30 p.m., hosted by Olympia Entertainment.

New this season, Michigan and Michigan State will battle for the “Iron D” trophy, which will be awarded to the winner of the annual clash at The Joe. The trophy is being built by Erik and Israel Nordin at the Detroit Design Center and will feature a large “D” in the center of the trophy made of iron. In addition, the skyline of the city of Detroit and the new Detroit Events Center will be highlighted at the base of the trophy.

“We always love coming to play at The Joe,” said Michigan head coach Red Berenson. “A lot of our players grew up watching the Red Wings and watching Michigan play Michigan State. It’s a big thrill for them, it’s a big thrill for the coaches, and our fans love it as well. And now having a trophy emblematic of this game and this competition will be terrific.”

“It’s always exciting for our players to come back and play in Detroit,” said Michigan State head coach Tom Anastos. “All the energy going on in the city today, the great history of the Red Wings and the support of college hockey from the Ilitches make this game a circled date on the calendar. The addition of the trophy adds a new twist to the rivalry and we’re looking forward to being a part of it.”

Fans will get a chance to see the stars of tomorrow when the teams hit the ice, as No. 6 Michigan boasts 12 NHL draft picks on its roster, including Zach Werenski, who was drafted No. 8 overall in 2015 by Columbus and served as captain of the bronze-medal winning U.S. National Junior Team at the recent World Junior Championships in Finland. Michigan State also has five players who have been drafted. Michigan currently sits in first place in the Big Ten with a 4-1-1 conference record (13-3-3 overall) and Michigan State is in sixth place at 1-5-0 (5-15-2 overall).

The “Duel in the D” features the most-played rivalry in college hockey, as the annual clash at The Joe will mark the 308th meeting between Michigan and Michigan State, with the Wolverines holding a slight edge in the all-time series, 158-130-19. Michigan claimed a pair of wins last weekend (Jan. 8-9) over the Spartans during a home-and-home series in the first two meetings between the teams this season.

The rivals have met at least once per season at Joe Louis Arena since 1990, with the Wolverines holding the series advantage at The Joe with a 14-10-4 record. The two teams split a pair of games in Detroit last season, as Michigan claimed a 2-1 win over Michigan State to win the MacInnes Cup in the 50th Annual Great Lakes Invitational on Dec. 29, 2014, and Michigan State earned a 2-1 win in the “Duel in the D” on Jan. 30, 2015.
