Company History

Olympia Entertainment is one of the country’s most diverse sports and entertainment companies and the largest organization of its kind in the Midwest. The company owns and operates Detroit’s historic Fox Theatre and City Theatre. In addition, Olympia Entertainment book events and operates Joe Louis Arena, home of the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League (NHL) and books concert events Comerica Park, home of the Detroit Tigers of Major League Baseball. Olympia Entertainment also handles business operations for the Detroit Red Wings and collaborates with the Detroit Tigers and other companies owned by Michael and/or Marian Ilitch.

As Detroit’s premiere marketer of downtown sports and entertainment, Olympia Entertainment, along with other Ilitch companies, hosts on average 300 events and draws more than 10 million* guests among all venues annually.

Olympia Entertainment’s roots date back to 1927, when the Olympia Stadium was built in downtown Detroit to serve as a live entertainment venue and serve as the home of Detroit’s NHL franchise, named the Detroit Cougars (1926–1930). Nicknamed “The Old Barn,” Olympia Stadium opened on October 26, 1927 and hosted a variety of events including rodeos, concerts ( Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra to name a couple), boxing matches, presidential addresses, seven Stanley Cup winning Red Wings teams and housed the Detroit Pistons of the National Basketball Association. Olympia Stadium closed its doors in 1979 and was demolished in 1986.

In 1982, Mr. and Mrs. Ilitch purchased the management company for Olympia Stadium, Olympia Stadium Corporation. That same year, Mr. and Mrs. Ilitch purchased the Red Wings. The Olympia Stadium Corporation was finally renamed in 1996 to Olympia Entertainment to reflect the management company’s expanded operations and venues.

In July of 1987, Mr. and Mrs. Ilitch purchased the Fox Theatre and its adjoining office building. After nearly two years of renovations, where 100 percent of the theatre was restored by preserving 80 percent of the original 1928 finish, the Ilitches re-opened the Fox Theatre as the hub of the Foxtown Entertainment District. In 1989, the National Parks Service designated the Fox Theatre as a National Landmark. The Fox Theatre is listed annually among North America’s top-grossing theatres by Pollstar Magazine. The office building became the headquarters for Little Caesars Pizza Enterprises, Inc. in the fall of 1989 and now houses more than 500 employees.

Other Ilitch companies include: Little Caesars Pizza, Ilitch Holdings, Inc., Blue Line Foodservice Distribution, Champion Foods, Little Caesar Pizza Kits Fundraising Program, Olympia Development of Michigan, Uptown Entertainment. Detroit Tigers, Inc., and MotorCity Casino Hotel.
